the main divisionsDissension has six main member groups, as well as subgroups - called affiliations. These affiliations are based on political views that your character might have regarding the current climate with MACUSA and the NSPS. As affiliations are based on political views, it is possible to change based on your characters interactions, unless they are a canon in that group.

The Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA) is the magical body in charge of governing the wizarding population of the United States of America.
However, after the attack by the NSPS in 2027, which left the vast majority of MACUSA employees dead, the magical government fell apart. In fear, many of the surviving officials fled into hiding, leaving the North American magical community in relative chaos.
In the midst of this bedlam, Ronan Graves, the former head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, rallied the remaining body to her cause and proceeded to form what is now known as the main force against the growing threat of the NSPS with her as the new acting President of MACUSA.
Characters in this group work for MACUSA, most of them working to rebuild the government in a way in which furthers their own political beliefs and opinions regarding NSPS and now the magical community should interact with no-majs.
The New Salem Philanthropic Society (NSPS), also known as the Second Salemers, was a fanatical American No-Maj group which sought to expose and destroy wizardkind. Many had believed that the NSPS died out in the 1920's, but Kelvin Sommergrass saught them out and has rebranded them as the Oyer & Terminer Research Institute, a nationally celebrated center for the cure and prevention of disease.
The Institute's primary goal is to extract magic from wizardkind and use it to create medicine that all can use, but there are much more treacherous things brewing within its walls.
Characters in this group work for the NSPS, known to others as the Oyer & Terminer Research Institute, and they are doing work to bring magic to the nonmagical community, in one way or another. Nearly all characters in this group are nomajs.
Fringe encompasses a vast number of smaller organizations that emerged as a result of the cold war and sit outside of NSPS and MACUSA. Although members of these organizations are far less than that of the NSPS and MACUSA, they have slowly started to gather supporters and are starting to play a vital role in the war.
Witches and Wizards (this includes magical creatures) who are not part of any of the aforementioned groups. Most of them are split between the three current MACUSA political affiliations or are unaffiliated themselves. Some of them have been carrying on their lives as normal, whereas others are living in fear of the NSPS, afraid that they will be attacked next, or worse.
The American equivalent of "Muggles", No-Maj are non-magical people. No-maj characters on Dissension are often times relatives of witches, wizards, or NSPS members. They are often split between the NSPS affiliations or are unaffiliated themselves.
All minor characters who are still in school - No-Maj and Magical alike - belong to this member group. No-Maj Students may be unaffiliated or be affiliated to the NSPS via internships or alignment in personal views.
Ilvermorny has changed since the attack on MACUSA. Many families have chosen to pull their children out of school, and are now schooling them in the safety of their own homes. Others, recognize the fortress that is Ilvermorny and have kept them in school, where there is an even stronger focus on defense classes, as well as history and nomaj studies so students can understand the current political field. As such, all magical students on Dissension are affiliated with either the three major political views or one of the fringe groups.
