Member Groups

the main divisions

Dissension has six main member groups, as well as subgroups - called affiliations. These affiliations are based on political views that your character might have regarding the current climate with MACUSA and the NSPS. As affiliations are based on political views, it is possible to change based on your characters interactions, unless they are a canon in that group.

THE LIST

MACUSA

The Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA) is the magical body in charge of governing the wizarding population of the United States of America.

However, after the attack by the NSPS in 2027, which left the vast majority of MACUSA employees dead, the magical government fell apart. In fear, many of the surviving officials fled into hiding, leaving the North American magical community in relative chaos.

In the midst of this bedlam, Ronan Graves, the former head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, rallied the remaining body to her cause and proceeded to form what is now known as the main force against the growing threat of the NSPS with her as the new acting President of MACUSA.

Characters in this group work for MACUSA, most of them working to rebuild the government in a way in which furthers their own political beliefs and opinions regarding NSPS and now the magical community should interact with no-majs.

View MACUSA affiliations and canons
NSPS

The New Salem Philanthropic Society (NSPS), also known as the Second Salemers, was a fanatical American No-Maj group which sought to expose and destroy wizardkind. Many had believed that the NSPS died out in the 1920's, but Kelvin Sommergrass saught them out and has rebranded them as the Oyer & Terminer Research Institute, a nationally celebrated center for the cure and prevention of disease.

The Institute's primary goal is to extract magic from wizardkind and use it to create medicine that all can use, but there are much more treacherous things brewing within its walls.

Characters in this group work for the NSPS, known to others as the Oyer & Terminer Research Institute, and they are doing work to bring magic to the nonmagical community, in one way or another. Nearly all characters in this group are nomajs.

View NSPS affiliations and canons
FRINGE

Fringe encompasses a vast number of smaller organizations that emerged as a result of the cold war and sit outside of NSPS and MACUSA. Although members of these organizations are far less than that of the NSPS and MACUSA, they have slowly started to gather supporters and are starting to play a vital role in the war.

View Fringe affiliations and canons
MAGICAL

Witches and Wizards (this includes magical creatures) who are not part of any of the aforementioned groups. Most of them are split between the three current MACUSA political affiliations or are unaffiliated themselves. Some of them have been carrying on their lives as normal, whereas others are living in fear of the NSPS, afraid that they will be attacked next, or worse.

View Magical affiliations and canons
NO-MAJ

The American equivalent of "Muggles", No-Maj are non-magical people. No-maj characters on Dissension are often times relatives of witches, wizards, or NSPS members. They are often split between the NSPS affiliations or are unaffiliated themselves.

View Nomaj affiliations and canons
STUDENT

All minor characters who are still in school - No-Maj and Magical alike - belong to this member group. No-Maj Students may be unaffiliated or be affiliated to the NSPS via internships or alignment in personal views.

Ilvermorny has changed since the attack on MACUSA. Many families have chosen to pull their children out of school, and are now schooling them in the safety of their own homes. Others, recognize the fortress that is Ilvermorny and have kept them in school, where there is an even stronger focus on defense classes, as well as history and nomaj studies so students can understand the current political field. As such, all magical students on Dissension are affiliated with either the three major political views or one of the fringe groups.

macusa

Since the attack on MACUSA in 2027, what is remaining of the United States' government has been split into three primary political parties, each focused on rebuilding MACUSA in the way that they best see fit.

Loyalists

The Loyalists, Headed by Ronan Graves, are focused on rebuilding MACUSA to the same power that it once held. They believe that the government was thriving, and little needs to change in regard to the magical community's interaction with no-maj.

 canons
❋ Ronan Graves (NPC)
Emergency Head of MACUSA, 45, F.
The former Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, Ronan Graves rallied the remaining members of MACUSA after its fall. She is a ruthless leader and is dedicated to restoring the power of the North American Wizarding Community. (POC)

---- Muntz
Civilian Defense Division, 26, M/F.
One of the few (if not the only) members who actually take the division, and the duties and responsibilities that come with it, very seriously. Muntz is struggling to convince the other members of the division to actually do their jobs.

 current goals
- To resume the effectivity of all Departments and delegate loyal members as the head of each.
- To locate a new HQ. They are currently trying to negotiate with the headmaster of Ilvemorny for the use of the dungeons under the mountains but are being refused.
- To figure out the location or HQ of the NSPS and develop an action plan against them

Rappaportians

The Rappaportians have been deeply shaken by the attack on MACUSA and believe that the recent current events would never have transpired if Rappaport's Law had not been removed at the end of the last century. They believe that the best course of action is to remove all contact with nomajs and reestablish Rappaport's Law.

Following the attack on MACUSA, many view the Rappaportian's as something of an acceptable middle ground between the unreliable Loyalists and the polarising and extremist views of the Grindlewaldians.

 canons
❋ Charles Rappaport (NPC)
Head of the Department of Treasuries, 58, M.
A direct descendant of Emily Rappaport. A bumbling fool, who coasted his way into politics using the influence of his family name and generations of immense wealth. Was rumored to have once been secretly siphoning government funds to numerous offshore accounts.

 current goals
- Increase the number of donors & investors to their political movement.
- To gather as many members who are sympathetic with their ideas through propaganda, publicity, and quite often, misinformation.
- To maintain their popularity amongst the general public by gaining the support of the major political figures who survived the initial attack on MACUSA

Grindelwaldians
These party members seek to overturn the Statute of Secrecy and create a new order in which wise and powerful wizards and witches are the benevolent overlords of the world, including no-maj, and are surprisingly popular amongst the group of disgruntled and disenfranchised witches and wizards who long for the re-establishment of the status quo. They are highly wary of non-maj's not only for their involvement in the NSPS but also because they view the rise of the NSPS as a repeat of the Salem Witch trials of 1692-93. In addition to this, some factions of the organization have an aversion towards Magical creatures and 'half-breeds' - who they in part blame for drawing this attention to the wizarding community - it is quite similar to their perception their European counterparts hold on this issue.

 canons
----- Gonzales
Open Occupation, 36, M/F.
Head of the Grindlewaldians

Silas Stubbe
Leader of the Death Squad, 30, M.
Stubbe leads the Death Squad, a Grindelwaldian-funded magical military group that conducts extrajudicial killings, especially no-maj or magical creatures who they believe are working for the NSPS. Claimed by Vicky.

 current goals
- To gather powerful witches and wizards who share their goal of Wizard Supremecy.
- To gain the support of the major political figures who survived the initial attack on MACUSA
- To eradicate the NSPS and all who are involved in the death and disappearances of witches and wizards

nsps

This group is largely made up of no-majs who believe that magic should be available to no-majs, and are upset that wizardkind have kept it from them when they could have been using magic to solve the world's problems. Most Oyer & Terminer employees fall under the Clinical category and do not know about the Traditionalist and Militant groups, let alone that they were behind the MACUSA attack.

Clinical

They truly believe that magic, harnessed properly through the work and research created at the Institute can be used to guide the world into a better future. They're proud of the way in which the research conducted within the institute has already revolutionized the medical field - providing cures to illnesses that many had dismissed as a lost cause (helping both wizards and no-maj alike).

 canons
❋ Marguerite "Peggy" Lefevre (NPC)
Researcher at Oyer and Terminer Institute, 27, F.
The right-hand woman of Professor Sommergrass and an incredibly gifted scientist, Peggy wishes for nothing more than to further the Professor's vision of a new order in the magical world. She is deeply loyal and will stop at nothing to achieve her goals. Often seen smiling.

Benjamin Rush
Clinical Team, Nurse, 26, M.
An 'Idealist', inspired by the work The Institute has been able to do for the medical field, works as a 'caretaker' for the magical beings who've been subject to some of the institute's 'research'.

Victor McKinley
Researcher, 35, M.
Works in the research labs at The Institute. Has a real passion for science and biology, will often over look the subject in favour of the outcome. Conducts secret experiments deemed too 'unethical' for real world application.

Maeve Blackbourne
Researcher and Willing Test Subject, 25, F,
The test subject behind many of the Institute's experiments. A born No-maj, with growing magic living inside. Especially as an Obscurial, lives mostly under 24/7 surveillance. Hoping to the be 'Success Story' of the NSPS.

 current goals
- Currently working on experimental medical practices, such as testing whether or not they can harness magic in order to repair body parts - without surgical intervention.
- Discover other uses of Magic that they could use to further the development of medical research and methods.
- Find out who was behind the MACUSA attack.

Traditionalists

Traditionalists expect that the ultimate goal of the NSPS' current work, will be to eradicate magic entirely - removing all the freaks and monsters from the face of the earth. They believe that magic should not be in the hands of a singular person, such as a witch or wizard, and is only safe with organizations such as the Institute.

 canons
---- Blackbourne
Benefactor, Major Stockholder, 50, M.
The patriarch of an old and established upper-class family descended from Scourers who are marked by a profound belief in the existence of magic and an equally deep hatred of it. The Blackbournes were one the families who contributed the most to the success of the New Salem Philanthropic Society in terms of funding.

---- Wheeler
Executioner, 26, M/F.
Is in charge of the execution and disposal of witches and wizards who are no longer of use to the Institute. Wheeler is often described as devoid of emotion or empathy and not much is known about his/her history.
 current goals
- Campaign against teaming up with the Anarchists for fear of being betrayed and because of their aversion to all things magical
- Extract information from captured Witches and Wizards in order to seek out magical strongholds and other hidden locations.

Militant

They see even more potential for magic and want to find other uses for it. Primarily, they are focused on harnessing magic as a weapon, useful in both magical and nonmagical warfare.

 canons
---- Davis
Head of Public Relations, 30-35, M.
A charming man with a quick smile and suave exterior that hides the sliminess within, he is easily the most formidable No-Maj in the NSPS. Deeply ambitious and power-hungry. Believes that the Institute is just scraping the cusp of the market for the work that can be done using 'magic' - for the right buyer.

---- Ito
Occupation 26, M/F
A starch advocate for the military value in the Institute's work, with the current state of international affairs Lee not only realizes the domestic dangers of magic, but also the international dangers - the horrific fate that may await the U.S if other less stable countries began to harness it as a weapon themselves. They see the institute's work as a matter of national security, with the potential to ensure military success and protection for the U.S. for generations.
 current goals
- Experimentation on the captured Witches and Wizards to see how they could replicate it for military use and monetary gain
- Campaign to the military for funding so they will see the dangers of magic in civilian hands

fringe

Fringe encompasses organizations that emerged as a result of the cold war and sit outside of NSPS and MACUSA. They are people who do not affiliate with any of the main goals or views of either organization, but are still involved in the political tension.

CATACOMB SOCIETY

The Catacomb Society seeks to promote the interest of the often ignored magical creatures. They feel that MACUSA is too focused on keeping wizards and witches safe that they forget about the governments "tainted" constituents.

 canons

Abraham Lamb
Leader of the Catacomb Society, 30, M
Lamb is the passionate and charismatic leader of the Catacomb Society. They've been known to spend hours analyzing magical legislation, and lobbying politicians with various essays on their political views. One of the defining differences between Lamb and the leader of the anarchists is Lamb's belief that overtime wizards and magical creatures will be able to truly unite as equals, and the only way to achieve this goal is by proving that they are not the monsters that wizards claim they are. Claimed by Karrie.

 current goals
- Establish safe-houses for magical beings in the underground tunnels of Northstone.
- Gain Support for their cause, finding allies within an already overworked and disorganized MACUSA
- Proposing alternative legislative action that might lead to the peaceful promotion of Magical Creature's interests.

THE ANARCHISTS

The Anarchists are a group of magical creatures committed to ensuring the downfall of the wizarding community as we know it. They cannot find it in themselves to support a system that for centuries had sought to systematically oppress them. Run by Selene Moreau, a centuries-old vampire with a vendetta against wizards, the Anarchist are comprised of the desperate, dangerous and disenfranchised.

In addition to feeding their own selfish needs, they seek to assist the NSPS in achieving their goals and were instrumental in abducting the first few magical subjects. In return for helping the NSPS, they have been granted immunity from persecution.

 canons
Selene Moreau
Head of the Anarchists, 328, F, Vampire.
A chilling woman of imposing stature, Selene Moreau knows no morals when it comes to getting what she wants. She has sired several children over the years, and was known as the Red Scourge through England and France for a little over half a decade, after the killing of thirty-seven separate No-Maj in order to quench her thirst (it is rumoured that she used two of her children to lure these victims in). After being discovered, she fled to America and soon found herself leading the Anarchists. Claimed by Lana

Avery Lexington
Second-in-Command, 29, M/F, Half-Vampire.
Son of Selene, with Charles Lexington. Sympathises with his mother's views of the wizarding community, and is deeply loyal to her, much to his father's chagrin. Non-magical. Claimed by Av

- Maintain good relations with the NSPS and make use of their immunity to further establish their reputation as a force to be reckoned with

FINITE INCANTATEM

Established by former members of the world-famous Duelling Club (also named Finite Incantatem) of Ilvermorny, Finite is a group of civilians comprised of witches and wizards working outside of MACUSA who are unhappy with MACUSA's current efforts to protect wizardkind in the U.S. and have taken matters into their own hands. They are committed to defensive strategies that prioritize the well-being of the magical community over the destruction of the NSPS.

 canons
---- O'Brien
Leader of Finite Incantatem, 37-45, M/F.
The youngest ever Finite Incantatem President and the first to lead the Ilvermorny American Duelling club into a four-year championship streak. Known by many as a famous Hit Wizard, O'Brien is now the leading face behind the newly formed civilian-militant organization.

Sawyer Thomas
Head of the Recruitment and Training Division, 20, F.

Rappaportians

In Hiding

Following the attack on MACUSA, many American wizards, witches, and magical beings went into hiding, afraid that they would be detected by NSPS and killed. Their main goal is survival. Due to their fear of being detected and captured or killed, they are the ones who minimize or even stop the use of magic and are focused on staying hidden.

Unaffiliated
